Chiropractic history
The History of Chiropractic
The maintenance and well being of the human condition through spinal
adjustments, has been a long standing accepted tradition throughout history.
Paintings from ancient Egypt reveal the practice of treating the cervical spine.
The Bible mentions the Israelite midwives that practiced their skills during their
exile in Egypt. The midwives palpated and adjusted the infants spines at birth
to facilitate their growth and development.
Even Hippocrates who is considered the father of modern medicine is quoted
as saying “In disease look to the spine”.
and the Chiropractic story
The ancient method was rediscovered by Daniel David (DD) Palmer in
Davenport, Iowa, in 1895, thus earning him the title of Father of Modern
Chiropractic .
D. D. Palmer, or DD as he was called by his friends, was a magnetic healer. He
traveled from town to town helping suffering people who lost all hope for
salvation from their pains. He used magnets in his therapy regulating the flow
of energy through the body of his patients.
Harvey Lillard, a janitor that DD knew for many years, came to him for
treatment. Harvey Lillard was hard of hearing and in order to talk to him, one
had to talk very loudly. Lillard told DD that he wasn’t always hard of hearing. In
fact as an infant he used to have perfect hearing. But one day, 17 years prior,
he lifted a heavy object, heard a loud “pop” in his upper back and since then his
hearing had deteriorated.
DD asked Lillard to lay down on a bench, palpated his upper spine and felt one
vertebra that stood out from the rest and that was painful to the touch. DD
positioned his hands on that vertebra and with a quick motion pressed down
on it and a loud « pop» was heard. DD then bent down to Lillard and asked
loudly “how does that feel now?” Lillard turned to DD and asked him why he
was yelling.
With one swift move, 17 years of deafness vanished.
This incident started DD on a long journey of discovery to what we know
today as Chiropractic .
